Delta: Starving Villagers Cry Out for Help as Oil Spill Ravage Urhobo Community of Otor-Edo (PHOTOS)

LAGOS MAY 13TH (URHOBOTODAY)-The people of Urhobo community of Otor-Edo, Ughelli South local government area OF Delta State has appealed to Delta State government, private organizations, religious organizations and well meaning Nigerians to come to their assistance in term of humanitarian aids.
Their demands for assistant became necessary due to oil spillage which had destroyed their aquatic system, farms and crops which have prevented them from getting hygienic drinking water.

The spillage was reported to have occurred as a result of burst in a pipeline owned by Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) which passed through the community.
When Urhobotoday visited the scene, the crops in their farms were dried up as a result of the spillage as the pollution of the river prevented the villagers from fishing which is one of the main profession.
Besides, they did not only lost thousand of Naira in their destroyed farmland, they also became jobless as there is no land to farm.
Thus, their dilemma is double. One, they have lost their means of livelihood and cannot practice their profession which is aquatic and land farming. Besides, there is no water to drink as their source of drinking water was also polluted

Speaking to Urhobotoday, President –General of Otor-Edo Community, Chief Jerry Efeakpokrire said they wake up one day to discovered that their farmland, river, and even their drinking water have been polluted by oil as a result of oil spill from NPDC burst pipe that passed through their community.
He said the spillage has destroyed their farmland and aquatic farming, adding that presently there is serious farmine in the community. He appealed to government, corporation organization and well meaning Nigerians to come to their aid.

He said they have already giving the company seven days ultimatum which suppose to expire today , to clean up the mess and pay compensation to the villagers, adding that they have to rescind their decision when Liason Officer to Delta State Government, Mr Jones and head of SSS in the state appealed to them not to resort to protest hence discussion is ongoing with the management of NPDC over the issue.
“The liaison Officer to Delta State Governor on Security, Mr Jones and the head of State Security Service (SSS) also called saying that we should not take any violent action. They said the are discussing with the management of Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC). Government representatives, , health officials, Regulators and security agents are part of the investigation team at the spillage site.
