UNIBEN Lecturer in Court over Bribery Allegations


LAGOS AUGUST 25TH (URHOBOTODAY)-One time Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Benin, Isu-Ochiora Okogeri was on Wednesday arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Ekiadolor on the allegations of demanding and accepting a bribe of N100,000 from a female student.
The offence was alleged to have been committed in December 2012 while the accused wanted to use his powers as a member of the Intra-Faculty Transfer Board of the university to influence the lady’s transfer to another faculty.
Isu-Ochiora Okogeri was charged on a one-count charge of corruptly enriching himself as a public officer by receiving the money from the lady, Omoluwabi Elogho. The offence is punishable under Section 98(b)(11) of the criminal code.
Testifying in the matter, Head, Intelligence Unit at the security department of the university, Edoseghe Oghogho Idahosa told the court that the accused received the money from the student to process her transfer from the Faculty of Arts to the Faculty of Law.
Led by the state counsel, Kenneth Ugiagbe Esq, Edoseghe added that they arrested the culprit following intelligence information after which they encouraged the female student to play along.
