Chief Coach of Delta State male football team, Ikpahwore Kenneth has stated that their aim is to win the gold medal of the football event.

Delta kicked off their quest with three bonus points on Monday at the Onikan Stadium without kicking a ball, as their opponents, Abia State did not show up in good time. Delta were awarded the three points and three goals but Kenneth argued that he would have loved to play the game to test the readiness of his players.

Kenneth, who helped the Delta State female football team clinch gold medal at the 2004 edition of the festival stated that since inception of the games, Delta has not won the male gold medal and he believes it is time to lead the male team to win it as he did with the female team.

The former Nigerdock player disclosed to our correspondent that with the level of their preparedness, they are ready to do the state proud, “The Delta State Government gave us all the support we need, if you look around you’ll see that our supporters club are around to cheer us to victory, they travelled all the way from Delta, so it would be unfair not to win the gold medal in the football event likewise other sports”.

Delta are in Group A with Adamawa, Plateau, Oyo, Katsina, Abia, who didn’t show up and the hosts, Lagos State,  meaning that Delta would have their hands full against the host state on 30 November. But Kenneth believes that Lagos State can not stand in their way and the gold medal.

“Hosting to win has always been the slogan, Team Delta are here for business and with God on our side we would present the goal medal to our sports loving governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan”.

Tuesday (Today) has been declared rest day to enable all the athletes and officials attend the Opening Ceremony slated for the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, while action would resume on Wednesday.

Oyo and Delta states would square up in tomorrow’s first match, Katsina would trade tackles with Adamawa, while Lagos would confront Abia State.
