Onuesoke Slams CONFAB over Creation of States

Chief Sunny Onuesoke

LAGOS JULY 11TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Delta State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in 2007 general election, Chief Sunny Onuesoke has condemned the decision of the delegates of National Conference to create more eighteen states to be share equally among the six geo-political zones.
Onuesoke who condemned the decision while responding to questions from journalists after arising Directors meeting of Network for Good Governance (N4GG) in Warri, Delta State said while it is a good decision to create more states in the country, he, however, faulted the decision to share the propose states equally among the six geo-political zones.
Onuesoke who want to know the rational at which CONFAB is using for state creation argued that it would be wrong to create more states out of the North East and North Central part of the country when it is glaring that states in that part of the country are not economically viable to finance their expenses.
Onuesoke queried why creating a state from those area when they cannot raise N50m monthly as revenue.
According to him, one of the major factor of which a state should be created has to do with its economical viability which majority of the present states in the core Northern of the country is lacking.
He said the core North has viewed the creation of states as means of raising fund from the federal government.
He, however, suggested more states should be created from the Middle-Belt, South-East, South-West and Niger-Delta Regions that are economically viable and not in the core North area that has no economical viability to the nation.
“Of what use is it to create a state that cannot contribute to the national treasury not to talk of fending for itself? Most of the present states we have in the core North cannot fend for themselves. They depend on the federal allocation for survival.
“Creating more states from the Northern-East and Northern Central part of the country is like creating more economical problem for the federal government. Rather, I will suggest that more states should be created in the Niger Delta region, Middle-Belt,South-East and South-West zones which are the economic hub of the country,” Onuesoke who is the Country Director of N4GG argued.
