LAGOS OCTOBER 26TH (URHOBOTODAY)-STRIKING lecturers at the Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, Delta State, during the week, took to the streets, challenging the state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, to implement his threat of ‘no work, no pay’, Monday in Abuja.
Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities, DELSU, Abraka branch, Dr. Emmanuel Mordi, who led the protest march round the community noted that the Federal Government had stopped the payment of salaries of lecturers in federal universities because of the nearly four months strike, following which the state government had threatened to also stop salaries of lecturers in the state-owned university.
His words, “The Delta state government has also announced its intention to follow suit. We need to remind them that the policy of ‘no work, no pay’ will give rise at the end of the day to the policy of ‘no pay, no work’ because every actions begets an equal reaction.”
Dr. Mordi said ASUU has passed the point of no retreat, no surrender in the strike action, adding, “The struggle continues until government fully implements the 2009 agreement, the 2012 MoU and the the 2013 Technical Report on Needs Assessment of Nigerian public universities.
Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, had at the fund raising ceremony of N25 billion by the Edwin Kiagbodo Clark Foundation in Abuja, said that the policy of ‘no work no pay’ would be applied for the on-going strike action by the academic staff of the State university (DELSU), Abraka. He said the ‘no work, no pay’ policy became necessary after several appeals to the lecturers to call off the strike yielded no result, adding that the policy was adopted because the demands of ASUU had no bearing with lecturers in the state university.
