Gov’s Cup: Fulfill Your Promise to Secondary Schools, Rev Okolie Reminds Uduaghan

LAGOS OCTOBER 10TH (URHOBOTODAY)-A former footballer and high jumper, Reverend John Okolie, has charged Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan to fulfill the promise he made to all the secondary schools and colleges in the state before the kick off of the maiden edition of the 2013 Delta Schools Governor’s Cup football competition.
Saturday Mirror gathered that the Governor had promised to sponsor both the winners of the secondary schools version and Primary school version of the competition to a foreign trip.
Former Green Eagles skipper, Chairman Christian Chukwu, ex- Super Eagles captain Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, ex-Golden Eaglets’ Captain Wilson Oruma and a host of other ex-Internationals and national footballers were present at the opening ceremony held at the Ultra modern Warri Township Stadium, Warri.
In the final of the secondary schools’ version of the soccer championship, Sparkling Comprehensive Secondary School, Oguwashi-Ukwu, defeated Alegbo Secondary School, Efurun by 1-0 to emerge champions, at the aforementioned venue, on May 28.
According to Reverend Okolie, a primary school, based in Warri which won the primary version of the competition had been sponsored to their own trip by Governor Uduaghan, and had since returned.
“Globally, football has gone beyond ordinary sporting event. It has become a way of life and most importantly, a source of livelihood to many families. “To become a star, it does not matter if the player was born and bred in the remotest village in the Greeks of Niger Delta or in the Splendid District of Abuja or Lagos.
“Students and players of the Comprehensive Secondary School, Ogwashi- Ukwu, were in a very happy mood after winning the 2013maiden edition of the Delta State Governor’s Cup Soccer Competition because of the promise made by the donor of the cup.
“How does the Governor want the schools in Aniocha South to participate in the subsequent editions of the competition with the circumstances surrounding the maiden edition? The Delta State number one citizen ought to leave a legacy behind for people to emulate at the end of his tenure of office by fulfilling his promise,” Okolie explained
