NPFL: Sharks Humble Warri Wolves in Port Harcourt
LAGOS AUGUST 2015 (URHOBOTODAY)-The damage was done in the first half as goals by Frederick Obomate and Chiamaka Madu set the tone for the win and although Kufre Ebong pulled one back for Wolves late in the game, Sharks held off superbly to ensure the visitors left the Garden City empty-handed.
Sharks coach, Festus Allen, handed former Bayelsa United midfielder Bassey Nkereuwem his debut for the club and his team showed their intention from the start. Rather than the timid showing in Warri, this was a different looking Sharks, a side that looked like they had got back their groove.
Striker Jackson Daniel had a chance in the opening moments but Wolves defender Goodluck Onamado nicked the ball off him in the danger area. Aremu Afeez would fire over minutes later before Sharks eventually took the lead. The visitors conceded a free-kick just at the edge of the area and Obomate stepped up and curled the ball over the wall and into the top corner.
The second came soon after and it was a lovely combination by the Sharks front men. A ball from the right found the hardworking Ifeanyi Inyam, he set up Madu, the number 9 struck before the opposing defenders could react, sending the ball beyond Odah and into the Warri Wolves goal.
Sharks remained not only stronger and sharper than the Seasiders throughout the first period, they were also the more coherent side.
The visitors sprung to life in the second period and they did muster a few threatening moments. Michael Egbeta forced Charles Thambe to a finger tip save and Onamado followed suit minutes later but Thambe was not to be beaten by those long range strikes.
Wolves kept asking questions and nearly clawed one back when Super Eagles defender Azubuike Egwuekwe nodded at goal from a corner kick but again Thambe stood in the way. The goalkeeper would eventually be beaten five minutes from time when he parried a shot from Abu Azeez straight at substitute Kufre Ebong, the striker finished with aplomb to give the visitors a glimmer of hope.
But the home team saw off the remaining minutes expertly to secure a third home win of the season. There was talk of Wolves going top of the table with a win in Port Harcourt, sadly they failed to put up the befitting performance.
