LAGOS DECEMBER 2ND 2013 (URHOBOTODAY)-Hundreds of persons are reported to have died in a clash between the military and suspected members of the Boko Haram sect on Monday in Borno State.
The dead are made up of military men, members of Boko Haram and civilians.
The clash took place in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
This has led to the imposition of a 24-hours curfew on Maiduguri by the state government.
A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Ahmed Jidda, signed the statement announcing the curfew.
Jidda said the curfew was imposed in consultation with the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri.
The statement added, “During the period of curfew, government pleads with all citizens to remain calm.
“Only vehicles on emergency calls and essential services are allowed to move while the curfew will be lifted as soon as situation improves”.
Suspected Boko Haram terrorists on Monday morning again struck in Maiduguri, Borno State capital as they attacked Maiduguri International Airport and the Composite Group Air force Base where several people were killed.
We gathered that sporadic gunshots and other Rocket Propelled Launchers fire were heard which a source said started at about 3am till 8 am in Maiduguri and Jere metropolis.
“The explosive were planted in targeted areas in the state capital”, the source added.
Sources hinted that The rampaging Boko Haram members were said to have attacked the Nigerian Air Force Base in Maiduguri and also the Maiduguri International Airport.
The development made the military to resort to air strikes to contain the attack, sources told different news medium on Monday.
The Boko Haram group, according to the source, also attacked the newly constructed trailer parks along Damaturu- Maiduguri road, military check points and other residential and public buildings, which led to the death of scores of people among the terrorists and security agencies.
