Delta: One Dead, as Renew Crisis Rocks Itsekiri Community of Ugborodo

LAGOS NOVEMBER 7TH (URHOBOTODAY)-At least one person was reported killed in a renewed hostility along the Warri River over community leadership tussle at 911 Jetty in Ugborodo, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.
In the renewed crisis, Itsekiri and Delta State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) youth leader, Chief Emami Ayiri and others were allegedly fingered as responsible for the renewed crisis.
According to our correspondent, the incident occurred at about 2;30am on Wednesday when armed youths allegedly loyal to the top PDP youth leader in the state unleashed terror on youths who were on a security patrol along Escravos River in Ugborodo, a host community to Chevron Nigeria Limited.
It was gathered that yesterday fresh attack was not unconnected to recent leadership tussle in the oil rich Ugborodo Community in Warri South West of Delta State.

Newsmen who visited the community after the incident observed that the villagers have deserted the town for the fear of further attacks from the other camp. Worst still, the gunmen carted away the corpse of the youth identified as Mr. Sunny after he was shot severally on the chest. At the time journalists visited the village, they were still searching for the corpse.
One of the youths who was on duty, Mr. Romoe Mene who survived in the attack, told Urhobotoday that six of them who were on duty assigned to guide the area because of incessant activities of oil thieves in the area were attacked by some youths of the community numbering seven at 911 Jetty, Akpakpa-Ajidabo village within the Ugborodo community.

Mene alleged that the gunmen numbering seven who came in an Accelerated 019 speedboat were allegedly led by one Besidone Eyiengho popularly called Kiki, a cousin to Chief Emami Ayiri..
He explained that the armed youths before shooting at the decease, boosted that peace would be far from the community since they have chosen to recognize another group in the community as their leaders other than Chief Emami Ayiri. He further alleged that Kiki said they were sent by Chief Thomas Ereyetomi, Pastor Isaac Botosan and Chief Emami Ayiri to kill anybody that tends to stand on their way in the community.
He desclosed that some of them who survived the incident flew into the bush when the gunmen arrived the jetty in a commando like manner and the late Sunny was the only one on the patrol speed boat before shooting at him severally on the body.
According to him, “We are six in the boat early this morning to guide the area and we stopped at 911 Jetty to wait. While we were there, one speed boat drove down unknown to us the people inside were armed with guns. The first person I saw was Kiki (Chief Ayiri’s cousin) and they pointed guns at us and started shooting at our direction. Sunny who was still inside the boat was shot several times and some of us ran into the bush.
“After their departure, we searched for Sunny but was nowhere to be found. Until we discovered blood littering the boat. They mentioned some names before they shot at us.”
On his part, Mr. Benson Dube, the Spiritual Head (Oloja-Orori) of Ugborodo Community while narrating the incident to newsmen said he was alerted last night of fresh attack on the community youths who were on duty to protect oil facility in the area.
Dube who spoke on behalf of the Ugborodo Community said five of the community youths who sustained several degrees of injuries are currently receiving treatment while one is learnt to be kill by the gunmen who attacked them. He added that they are still searching for one of the youths alleged to have been killed.
While giving a chronological narration of what happened, he said “Because of the recent federal government decision to end oil theft, we in the community decided to form a community security team to guide the area every night against their activities. As at yesterday some boys attacked our youths who were on duty and one of the youth is yet to be seen as I am talking to you. We are still searching for his body.”
He pointed out that the community is in great shock over the incident, adding that it was unprecedented. He appealed to the state government to ensure that peace reign in the community.
Also speaking, Mama Ayuwe who spoke on behalf of the women folks said the community is currently in fear over the incident, but however appealed for peace.
Independent investigation by our correspondent, observed that the same leadership tussle that caused several attacks on the 3rd November 2012 that claimed over three lives were the same people who orchestrated the yesterday’s attack.
Sources in the community fingered one Mr. Julius Atete, Emmanuel Onuwaje popularly called Tunu and the said Kiki alleged to be acting on behalf of Chief Ayiri and others.
Angry villagers fingered the Marine Police who they suspected aided the attack. They accused them of working for the interest of Chief Ayiri against the general interest of the community.
It was also gathered that soldiers were deployed to the community last Monday morning to arrest some youth leaders over false information that they were planning to attack Chevron Nigeria Limited, Escravos. But a security source confided on our correspondent that it was a false alarm, only for gunmen men to attack the community yesterday morning.
The speed boat where the Late Sunny was shot was full with poll of blood when newsmen visited the community.
It was learnt the speed boat used by the gunmen were later discovered by the community youths. They are Passport DTSG/RMT/0106 and Accelerated 019. At the time of filling this report, military have besieged the community.
When contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Lucky Oyebeme said he was not aware of the incident, promising to call the Warri Area Commander for update on the incident.
Efforts to reach the Commanding Officer Joint Task Force (JTF) Major Gen. Ifeanyi Otu on the incident was however fruitless as calls put to his line was not connecting.
Urhobotoday try to get across to Chief Emami Ayiri on telephone but he refused to pick calls. Sms messages sent to him were not replied.
