Delta Central Election: Family Divides over Claim of Fraudulent Election

Ballot papers and electoral materials dumped by unknown persons during the just concluded Delta Central Senatorial bye-election

LAGOS OCTOBER 16TH (URHOBOTODAY)-THE prominent Omene family in Mosogor, Delta State, has been divided along party lines by the just concluded by-election in Delta Central senatorial district.
Dr. Wilson Omene, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, chieftain and former local government chairman, has, meanwhile, denied claims that the election, won by PDP’s Chief Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, was marred by electoral fraud.

However, two of his elder brothers, Chief Joseph Omene and Chief Blessing Omene, chieftains of All Progressives Congress, APC, differed.
They said that cases of multiple thump printing were reported in a number of polling units in Mosogar community.
They told reporters that they were beaten up by security officials and stopped from voting on the order of a top government official, who also intimidated voters with security officials.
However, Dr. Wilson Omene, who spoke to newsmen in his Mosogar country home, said: “There were no malpractices, no cases of snatching of ballot boxes, no intimidation as being alleged by the opposition political parties.”
He called on opposition members to join forces with PDP to move the Urhobo nation forward for greater development and recognition by the Federal Government.
Omene said PDP won because it fielded a credible candidate, adding that the party lost the election in 2011 because it did not field a credible and acceptable candidate.
