The fragile peace in the twin cities of Effurun and Warri, Delta State was shattered this morning by rampaging armed gangs.
In one of the attacks, an unspecified number of armed youths opened fire on prison warders conveying armed robbery suspects in Okere area of Warri at about 9:30am.
The bodies of no fewer than four warders were later recovered from the scene after the bloody shootout.
Eyewitnesses say the warders came under intense gunfire from assailants suspected to be members of the suspects’ gang.
“The boys shot severally at the vehicle, overpowered them and freed at least one of the suspects. I do not know how many persons died but the shooting was quite intense,” a source said.
In another incident, pandemonium broke out in the Effurun Roundabout area of Uvwie Local Government Area of the state when a gang shot sporadically in a desperate getaway attempt after dispossessing a female motorist of her car.
There was also unconfirmed report of sporadic gunshots around the GT Bank area of Airport Road.
It could not be ascertained if the incidents were related.
