LAGOS AUGUST 15TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Oil producing communities in Delta State on Sunday raised an alarm that the state Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, is working underground to ground the activities of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission.
The oil producing communities, comprising Urhobo, Ijaw, Itsekiri, Isoko and Ndokwa ethnic nationalities, accused the governor of starving the commission of its statutory 50 per cent of the 13 per cent derivation fund accruing to the state from the Federation Account.
However, the state government dismissed the allegation, saying that the state was not living in isolation from the prevailing economic downturn in the country.
But in a statement issued on behalf of the oil-bearing communities under the aegis of Delta Oil and Gas Stakeholders Group by Dr. Tagbiretse John, Josiah Ebidenwei and Obakpo Goodluck; President, Secretary and External Affairs Officer, respectively, accused the state government of failing in its duty to the agency.
“We have watched with growing exasperation, the languor and systematic rot that has currently crept in and overtaken the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission since the present administration took over in 2015. We can no longer sit down and do nothing while a colossal conspiracy to cripple the only hope of oil producing communities in the state is unravelling before our eyes,” the group stated.
