2 Die, Scores Injured in Urhobo Community Leadership Crisis
LAGOS AUGUST 19TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Two persons, yet unidentified, have been reported dead and a number of others receiving treatment for injuries over conflict between two camps warming up for leadership election next Saturday at Ughevwughe community, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State.
A community leader who pleaded anonymity said one of the deceased was shot Sunday night in the heat of the rivalry between the warring factions while the other died at Ubogo Junction, Udu area in an accident involving a motorcycle conveying the shot victim to hospital.
“It is a messy situation. The shot victim was being rushed to a private hospital as public hospitals were on strike. At Ubogo Junction, the Okada conveying the victim had an accident. The rider and the gunshot victim gave up in the process. We are meeting with the police before we can give further details,” our source said.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Celestina Kalu confirmed that the police dispatched a team to effect arrest and calm tension upon receipt of the report.
She said no arrest has been made yet as suspects have fled the town while corpse has been recovered and deposited at the Jeremi General Hospital mortuary.
“Those injured have been taken for treatment at yet unknown clinic. Efforts to arrest suspects is on,” the Police statement added.
