Crisis Brews in Urhobo Community over Oil compensation

Delta State Commissioner of POlice Mr Ikechukwu Aduba

LAGOS JULY 26TH (URHOBOTODAY)-One Oforishe family in Afiesere town, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, South South, Nigeria, has petitioned the Nigeria Police over an alleged attacked on their property and threat to life by the Afiesere Community Leaders.
In the petition made available to DailyPost and signed by the head of the family, Mr. Joseph Oforishe and addressed to the Area Commander in Ughelli and copied to the Inspector General of Police,IGP, DPO, Division A – Ughelli, and the DPO, Division B – Agbarha, the Oforishe Family alleged that the Leaders of the Afiesere community had plans to assassinate members of the Oforishe Family in the like manner they assassinated a one time defaulting community leader of Afiesere, George Onobruchere on March 10, 1999, and the killing of one Sunday Oboraruvwre on 9th April, 2005 as well as the subsequent assassination of a Divisional Police Officer in 2006 which led to the burning of several houses in Afiesere Town.
According to the petition, the community, through its cronies; Peter Onoberhe (Chairman), Austine Oghwo (Vice Chairman), Emmanuel Shikaleke (Secretary) and others has started making good their threat as they are now disconnecting all buildings linked to the Oforishe family from power supply and has also, instructed its Town Drummer and Town Crier, Godspower Otan and Samuel Okorigba respectively to announce the ostracizing of the Oforishe family members; home and abroad, which was done on the 29 June, 2013.
Meanwhile, the said issue that sparked off the actions is pending in the Ughelli High Court 11, Delta State. The Oforishe family has gone to court demanding for their rights and access to compensations on oil exploration in their family land via two oil wells (well15 and well29) operated by the shell petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).
However, when Mr. Onoberhe, the community chairman was contacted on phone, he denied all the claims made in the petition, he said, “nothing of such exists”. Meanwhile, in a telephone chat with the DPO, Agbarah, who confirmed the receipt of the petition, he said his boss, the Area Commander was on top of the matter and that the situation was control. However, report reveals that the Area Commander’s invitation of the Community Leaders has fallen on deaf ears, as non of the Community leaders has shown up in the Area Command as at the time of this report.
In a similar action, the Oforishe family Secretary, Mr. Oyinbo Oforishe appealed to the Police not to renege in their effort in the sustenance of justice and the protection of lives and property of the citizenry. He also called on all family members of the Oforishe to stay calm and exercise caution as justice would soon be attained.
