NURTW Crisis: Delta Police Boss Berates Council Chairmen for Abdicating Their Responsibilities

LAGOS JANUARY 8TH (URHOBOTODAY)-The Delta State Police Command has berated the authorities of local govt. councils in the state for their roles in the crisis rocking the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in Delta state.
The Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr. Alkali Baba Usman, disclosed this at the Ovwian/Aladja police division, Udu Local Government Area, Delta state during the former’s maiden visit to the Local Government Area on Thursday.
Alkali said the raging crisis in the NURTW is the handwork of council chairmen in the state.
The commissioner stated that while it is the constitutional responsibility of Local Government Councils to create motor parks and collect ensuing revenues, the council chairmen had abdicated their duties and rather resorts to imposition of NURTW executives across the state thereby encouraging crisis in the union.
Earlier at the Ovwian/Aladja Police Division, the D.P.O CSP Jonathan Acha commended the commissioner for his great effort in the provision of patrol vehicles and operational equipment. However CSP Acha appealled for the provision of more patrol vehicles for the division due to the size of the Local Government. Speaking earlier, Mr. Usman debunked the allegations that Udu has the highest rate of criminalities in Delta State.
At the Udu Local Government Council secretariat, the council chairman, Hon. Chief Solomon Kpomah in his address disclosed that the council peace and security committee has been meeting regularly to review security situation in the area while commending the DPO tackling criminal activities headlong.
Further at the palace of the Ovie of Udu kingdom, HRM Owhorhu I, the Police Commissioner stated that the issue of settling conflicts in the communities and the maintenance of peace and order requires the attention of the security agencies, community leaders and the judiciary. He therefore urged the community leaders and the Monarch to understand the position of the police in such circumstances.
At the erstwhile Delta Steel Company, Ovwian Aladja, Mr. Usman urges the new management (Premier Steel and Mines Limited) to fulfill their pledges of bringing back to life the moribund Delta Steel Company. And in his reaction, the representative of the management of premier steel, Mr. .P. koma informed that premier steel and mines limited is on ground to rehabilitate the plant starting with the rolling mills. He said “we wish to procure billets from India, China and Malaysia to enable us commence production of roll products by September 2016. Mr. Koma called for the full cooperation of the communities and the local government to enable them (premier steel) achieve the September target.
Meanwhile, the commissioner has told the police community relations committee and the Udu Council Chairman to brace up for adequate support for the vigilante Group for effective policing of the area
In the commissioner’s entourage included DSP Celestine Kalu state police public relations officer, DPS Kelvin Zuokumor, DPS Ebi Orubiri, and the Head of SSS Udu Local Government Area.
