LAGOS APRIL 29TH(URHOBOTODAY)-Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta councillors have given its Chairman, Mr Paul Etaga, two weeks ultimatum to make public details of the council’s income and expenditure. The councilors, who took the decision at their session in Ughelli, also announced the indefinite suspension of five of its Supervisory Councilors over alleged gross misconduct.
The motion was moved by Mr Kenneth Fovie and seconded by Mr Sunday Apah, during the sitting attended by 18 out the 20 councillors. Fovie said Section 23(c) and (d) empowered the lawmakers to summon the chairman to render monthly statements of accounts and annual reports. He said the development was to enable them to debate and “enforce the performance ethics.” Also, Apah said the chairman had not deemed it fit to render statement of account to the legislative arm since the inception of the administration on Oct. 27, 2014.
“We exercised one of our constitutional duties as lawmakers to checkmate the executive arm. “It is not to witch-haunt members of the executive arm but to ensure that the spirit of accountability exist within the political office holders and the civil servants,” Apah said.
