Delta Elite Calls for Urgent Conduct of LG Election, Says Caretaker Committee is Undemocratic
LAGOS MAY 4TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Delta Elite Movement (DEM), a non-governmental and non-partisan pressure group, designed to bring Deltans under the same umbrella to pursue common objectives hinged on development, has called on the Delta State government under the leadership of Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Udhuaghan to conduct Local Government Election in the next 3 months in the state.
This is a part of statement made available to newsmen rising from her meeting Saturday April
19th, 2014, at Asaba. The coordinator, Comrade Ogegere Enivwenaye, stated that Local Government as the third tiers of government was closer to the people, hence, is the only platform that guarantee grassroots participation in governance and development.
He noted further that the continued stay in office by the present caretaker committee constituted about two years ago was prejudicial to good governance as there is no accountability and transparency in their activities. He pointed out that it does not represent what Deltans desire at this time.
In his word, ‘’ It is unbecoming of the state government not to conduct election at the local government level in the state. It is not good for a government that pride itself as finishing strong’’.
The group pointed out that by not conducting local government, the state government has succeeded in depriving the people from participating in a constitutional process of choosing their own leaders, adding that it is through election that Delta State government can prove to the masses that he is a true Democrat and a leader that have them at heart.
