Date Of Annual Feast Tears Urhobo Community Apart

Urhoboland

LAGOS SEPTEMBER 1ST (URHOBOTODAY)-Protests erupted in Ovwor, a community in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, over disagreement on the date for the community’s annual feast.

The dispute which reportedly led to multiple casualties has drawn widespread attention to the handling of traditional disputes within the community.

The newly appointed chief priest was said to have directed that the annual feast should be held in August, while a local chief disagreed and said that it should be postponed until December.

The situation sparked outrage, particularly among the women of Ovwor, who took to the streets in protest against the actions taken against their loved ones.

The protesters were demanding justice and condemning the use of force against the youths.

The disagreement was said to have escalated into violence, with reports indicating that some community youths were allegedly shot by security operatives deployed by the chief who opposed the August date.

In the wake of the conflict, multiple arrests have been made under the orders of the chief, furthering inflaming tensions within the community.

Bright Edafe, Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command confirmed the protest, and stated that the situation is under control.
