Flooding: Onuesoke Foundation Advises Deltans on Waste Control
LAGOS JUNE 15TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Head of operations,Onuesoke Foundation on Climate Change, Mrs IGHO pearl patience has advised people of Delta State on the need to control the disposal of their waste product so as to avoid flooding and environmental disaster.
she also advised Delta State government to increase the waste dump sites in the state and increase campaign on waste control.
Pearl gave the advise on the hills of a three day torrential rainfall in Warri and Sapele in Delta State in which no fewer than four buildings collapsed and property worth millions of naira destroyed as a result of flooding.
Addressing journalist while sympathizing with the flood victims in Warri, Pearl said to avoid future occurrence of such flooding, the residents should practice the habit of dumping their waste in dust bins for onward delivery at dump sites instead dumping them in drainages, adding that such waste should be evacuated by designated agents for onward delivery at waste dumps for the waste to be converted to meaningful use like manure.
She advised landlords to provide waste bins in their compounds for residents to dump their waste, adding that they should avoid building houses or fences on drainage so as to avoid blocking the free flow of water.
Pearl advised the Delta State government to acquire more dump sites to ease the disposal of waste, adding that government should also embark on advocacy of proper waste disposal among the people.
He enjoined the state government to embark on construction of drainages in some parts of the cities to aid water flow pending the award of contract for the massive drainage work.
“All illegal fences not approved by the ministry of lands and survey should be removed forthwith. These illegal structures are blocking the drainage system. They have to be removed and the drainage channel to a major source for easy flow of water to avoid flooding,” she counseled.
