LAGOS JUNE 22ND (URHOBOTODAY)-There is palpable fear amongst senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force mostly among the ranks of officers of Assistant Inspector General (AIG’s) as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris has allegedly vowed to orchestrate the retirement of those officers who are his seniors.
According to our source, “A lot of AIG’s; about 24 of them may face compulsory retirement if the new IGP decides to bring his words to pass. He has threatened to retire any AIG who is his senior by one day.
“He fears that those AIG’s may not be loyal to him. Everywhere is calm now, no one knows his next step so every police officer in the country is careful.”
Another source at the Loius Edet House, Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force said: “The new IGP is a ruthless and unfriendly officer. As I speak with you now, no one in this headquarters knows his next step. He is also not a media friendly person. He is afraid of some of those AIG’s who are his senior colleagues because they also declared their interest in the IGP position when it was clear to all that Solomon Arase’s tenure would not be extended.”
The new police helmsman, Idris was the former Commissioner of police in charge of Kano State police command.
He was promoted recently to the coveted position of Assistant Inspector General, (AIG) His promotion was one of such steps taken by the IGP Solomon Arase that had elicited excitement in the force and among members of the public who knew his pedigree in Kano.
Idris is well respected by a cross section of law-abiding citizens of Kano. Kano residents once described him as a ‘quintessential cop’. His promotion to the rank of an AIG then was widely hailed as a dissevering reward for exemplary dedication, competence and professionalism.
Especially gratifying to pundits and those conversant with appointments in the Police Force, is the posting of Idris to assist a tested Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG, Mr. Wakama in the Federal Operations, which, like the Infantry of the Army, is the heart beat of the Police Force.
