Delta Police Kill Rapist Armed Robbers, as Irate Traders Set ‘Pocket Pickers’ Ablaze
LAGOS APRIL 5TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Rampaging armed robbers on Friday night allegedly raped a middle-aged house wife and her daughter in Ogwashi-Uku area of Delta State.
The bandits have in the last three weeks terrorised residents of Asaba and, Ogwashi-Uku communities and environs in the state.
It was reliably gathered that members of the robbery gang numbering four, were however, killed by the police shortly after they allegedly raped the woman and her daughter.
The police public relations officer in the state, DSP Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the incident, said that the armed robbery suspects had earlier allegedly raped two sisters around Umuoniecha Quarters in the community, but their attempt to rape the third one failed before they went for the mother and daughter. She said the police anti-robbery team acted on a tip-off.
Meanwhile, three suspected pick-pockets were yesterday set ablaze by irate traders at the popular Ogbegonogo Market in Asaba after their attempt to pick customers’ pocket failed.
Activities of pick-pockets in Asaba, especially around the market, had been a source of concern to the traders who vowed to make life unbearable for them.
Investigations revealed that their modus-operandi is to position themselves in strategic places within the market premises, often times pretending to be passengers waiting for commercial tricyles and immediately they see a potential victim, they would rush at him or her, pretending to be struggling to board the vehicle and in the process, remove money from his or her pockets.
Speaking to our correspondent, the chairman of an Asaba community vigilante outfit, Nnamdi Chukwuedi, said the suspects were caught and in anger, the irate traders set them ablaze after pouring kerosene on them.
He said that many of the pick-pockets are youths who after smoking Indian hemp, and gang member, who engage in criminal acts.
