Head Mistress in Trouble over alleged Extortion of NYSC Members
LAGOS APRIL 29TH (URHOBOTODAY)-For allegedly extorting members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed for the mandatory one year service at Ahabam Primary School, the Head mistress of the school, Mrs. Franca Odita has incurred the wrath of Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
The school head who was said to be in habit of extorting corps members deployed to the school of N1,500 on the excuse of buying plastic chairs before acceptance, was also accused of absenteeism by the chairman of SUBEB, Comrade Elijah Ologie.
Ologie who was monitoring the compliance level of pupils and teachers for the resumption of third term academic session, stated that the head teacher has been summoned to face interrogation on the allegations.
Comrade Ologie expressed sadness over the way some head teachers run the administration of schools in the state.
“Appropriate disciplinary measures will be spelt out for defaulting teachers, we have invited the head teacher of the school to the board, the lapses are too grave and I don’t think that the board will take it likely with the head teacher. We have gotten the report before and this is just confirmation,” he said.
The SUBEB boss added: “we have withheld a lot of teachers’ salaries for various degrees of offences and some were suspended, some lost their jobs and it is quite grave punishment”.
He charged teachers to step up their attitude towards the improvement of education in the state, saying: “we cannot play with the future of our children and society”.
The Board chairman encouraged parents to release their children upon resumption in order to meet up with academic work.
“The purpose of this monitoring is to ensure that the pupils and the teachers resume promptly. The turnout is very poor considering the fact that pupils have resumed for some time now and up till now, you don’t have a lot of them in the classroom even the teachers are not helping matters. It is quite disappointing”.
Comrade Ologie noted that government have done well in providing facilities for teachers to inculcate quality education but the teachers are lacking in that regard, “primary school is the foundation of every life of education in the world”.
