LAGOS JANUARY 23RD (URHOBOTODAY)-The streets of Warri, one of the oil rich city in Delta State, South-South Nigeria was on Friday, 16th of January 2015 held hostage as women from different communities protested against what they described as total exclusion from the campaign list of the ruling party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
The women under the aegis of Delta Women, a Non-Governmental Organisation carried placards written ‘PDP include our women’ and walked across different streets in Warri.
Speaking to journalists, the founder chief executive officer of the organisation, Ms Elsie Ijorogu Reed, stated that PDP in Delta has deliberately excluded the women in their campaign list.
“Having looked at the campaign list of Senator Okowa, the PDP Delta guber candidate, it is cristally clear that women would be left out in his administration should he wins.”
“Out of 1,025 members that made up the campaign list, only 132 are women whilst 32 women are already holding position in government. As the ruling party, we are afraid that our women would be left out as the statistics above shows that women are not up to ten per cent in his team.”
Ms Reed, stated that her organisation has written officially to the party chairman in the state but that their are yet to get a positive response from them.
