Abuja Lawyer, Akpodiete Hails Jonathan’s Rejection of Amnesty for Boko Haram
Abuja Based Lawyer and Human right activist, Prince Christmas Akpodiete has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for refusing to grant amnesty to Boko Haram an Islamic terrorists group.
Akpodiete who made the commendation while speaking with Urhobotoday at Abuja said President Jonathan was right when he told the Sultan of Sokoto that he cannot negotiate with ghost.
The human right activist who commended the Sultan of Sokoto’s efforts to ensure peace in Nigeria by soliciting for amnesty for the terrorist group, however argued that it was improper to grant amnesty to “terrorists”.
“It would be recalled that the Sultan made the call for amnesty for the Boko Haram members at a meeting of Ja’amatu Nasril Islam (JNI) in Kaduna on Thursday. The Sultan did not take into consideration the Barbaric evil and un pardonable acts the terrorist have caused. For justice to be done, criminals must be punished to the full length of the law,” Akpodiete stressed.
Akpodiete who described the Sultan of Sokoto as a peaceful and an amiable Monarch and a distinguished Nigerian who must be respected, however advised the Sultan to distance himself from criminal elements like Boko Haram so as not to drag his respected name into the mucky mud waters of terrorism.
He suggested that the right thing to do is to prosecute and take out of circulation Boko Haram that have overwhelmed our country with terror, adding that President Jonathan and Nigerian security agencies need commendation for curtailing the menace of Boko Haram so far.
