LAGOS NOVEMBER 5TH (URHOBOTODAY)-On Sunday the 30th day of October, 2016, at the expansive villa of Chief Johnny Esike, members of Urhobo Social Club Lagos and Urhobo Historical Society came together enmass to adopt Olorogun Moses Taiga as their indefatigable candidate to contest in the election for the position of President-General of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) in the forth coming election on December 5th, 2016.
In a precise effort to rectify the leadership crisis in UPU, the members of Urhobo Social Club Lagos and Urhobo Historical Society decided to draft in Olorogun Moses Taiga to contest for the very sensitive leadership position. This is not the first time a reliable, notable, honest and trust-worthy Urhobo personality has been nominated into this position for the purpose of restructuring, reorganizing and repositioning the union to its past glory.
In the 30s, the founder of Urhobo Brotherly Society, (presently known as UPU), Late Chief Okoro Omohwovo saw the leadership potentials, character, inter-personal skills, innovative and creative ability in the person of Late Chief Umukoro Mowoe, and inevitably drafted him in to manage the incipient Urhobo Progress Union (UPU).
History is now repeating itself as Urhobo Social Club Lagos (USCL) and Urhobo Historical Society (UHS) have seen these quintessential qualities in Olorogun Moses Taiga. According to the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Urhobo Social Club Lagos (USCL), Chief J.M. Barovbe, “Olorogun Moses Taiga has what it takes to restore the dignity and lost glory of the Union. Taiga is an astute Businessman who has served the Corporate world in different capacities, he is a creative and innovative leader with vast experience in organizing and managing people to achieve worthwhile goals.
According to Prof. Palmer Ekeh, Chairman Urhobo Historical Society (UHS), “This is the auspicious time for Urhobos to get this leadership problem solved and the right solution is Olorogun Moses Taiga.
In his acceptance speech, the present president of Olumu Kingdom, Olorogun Moses Taiga promised to start his tenure with 4 major projects if elected as President-General of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU). The proposed projects are; the Renovation of Urhobo Cultural Center at Uvwiamuge, Agbarho; Upgrading the infrastructures of Urhobo College, Effurun; Establishing a Micro Finance Scheme to empower Urhobo Women to enable them have access to capital for their small scale businesses; and the foundation laying of Urhobo University to be named after Umukoro Mowoe (Umukoro Mowoe University). He reiterated that his government would welcome informed ideas on ways to actualize the Urhobo Dream. When asked how he intends to juggle his busy schedule to serve the Urhobo nation in the capacity of President-General of UPU, he explained that his businesses are already established and running on their own. “My businesses run themselves, I can say they run on auto pilot and this gives me time to do actualize other projects.

  1. This is welcome news. The most important long term project of any UPU president could aspire to would be a political realignment of the Urhobo nation. The Urhobo nation must be able to define its political agenda vis a vis its status as a major, therefore, big brother figure in Delta State. It should desist from joining the fray in the contest for what block should provide the governorship candidate of the state. Instead, it should strive to achieve the developmental programmes of Urhoboland by assuming the role of a clearly defined godfather or kingmaker, while pursuing a climate of peaceful coexistence among the many blocks that make up Delta State. This, in my opinion, is the God-given role for the Urhobo nation by reason of it’s position. For a progressive and economically strong Delta State, there must be peace and trust among its various people. Only the Urhobo is better positioned to bring this climate to bear…

We want an Urhobo freeborn to head the UPU. Not migrants from Itsekiri land who pretend to be Urhobos and work with the Itsekiri political class to undermine and kill Urhobo nation.
We are tired of impostors and Urhobo men who married Itsekiri women and would not say no when it should be said in Urhobo/Iteskiri issues, yet want to lead.
We are tired of complacent fellows leading.
    Omuvwir r’ Urhobo su Urhobo.
We know the strangers in our midst who were deputy Governor, Current PDP Chairman and lots of them usurping Urhobo slot.
They are on their last lap and would incur the wrath of Urhobo Youths soon.
