Akpabio Denies Report of EFCC Arrest, Says He Visited the Anti-Corruption Agency Voluntarily
LAGOS OCTOBER 20TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Former Governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio has denied media report of his arrest, stating that he visited the office of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) on his volition.
He said although he was initially invited by the Agency before he got an auto accident, adding that after returning from treatment overseas he decided to honour the invitation.
Giving the clarification in a report monitored by Urhobotoday an online medium in African Independent Television (AIT) on Tuesday after the Senate Plenary section, Akpabio disclosed that he was initially invited by the anti-corruption agency but could not honour the invitation as a result of his ghastly auto accident in Abuja.
“Thus, after my treatment, I decided to honour the invitation. To my amazement, some section of the media over hype my visit to EFCC saying all sought of the things,” Akpabio who is the Senate Minority leader said.
He accused the media of writing sensational story in order to make sale instead of making effective investigation before going public..
Wondering how would have embezzle billions of Naira despite all that he had done in the development of the state, stressing that any visitor to the state would prove any allegation of corruption against him as false.
“Where would I have got the billions to embezzle after all the money I spent in developing the state during my tenure,” he queried.
Responding to question on what transpired between him and officials of EFCC during his visit to the anti-corruption agency’s office, Akpabio disclosed that he was asked simple questions about several projects he executed in Akwa-Ibom state during his eight years tenure in the state, adding that he gave them accurate statistics of project executed and expenditure.
“Go to Akwa Ibom state and see what I did during my tenure. I wonder how the press can just cook story of my embezzling billions of Naira. How can I take that huge chunk of money to myself after all that I have expended in the development of the state”, he wondered.
