LAGOS NOVEMBER 6TH (URHOBOTODAY)-The Principal and staff of Unenurhie Secondary School, Unenurhie community, Evwreni Kingdom , Ughelli North LGA of Delta state has cried out over the excesses of the community vigilante group under wise known as Civil Defence Corps.
The Acting Principal of the college,Mrs Oghoro who spoke to Urhobooday.com alleged that they have been experiencing sporadic gun shots by the men of this security outfit which has a check point close to the school.
“This regular gun shots fired by the vigilant group make the learning environment to be hostile to both students and teachers. As you can see, this is a school for young children. It ought to be a serene and conducive environment for meaningful learning and other academic activities to take place. But the activities of these security men in recent times are disturbing to us.
“Since we resumed this term, they have pursued drivers and passengers into the school premises, shooting at them at different times. The first one occurred during a morning assembly session and another one occurred immediately after the students were dispatched into their various classrooms. And you know students, they would be running here and there around the school premises, shouting and panicking,” the principal disclosed.
Oghoro however called on the Delta state Security Task Force to relocate the men of the Civil Defence Corps and their check-point from the area with immediate effect in order to protect and secure the school, staff and students.
” We are calling on the Delta state government and the Delta state Security Task Force to consider the lives of our dear students and teachers in this school. The government as a matter of urgency should relocate these men from this area. We are not against the good works these men are doing to make our roads safe and secured for drivers and pedestrians. We applaud them for doing good job. But pursuing people inside the school premises is not safe for teachers and students. It’s not also good in a school environment,” she stressed.
Another senior teacher in the school, Mr. Edjosuona complained that shooting sporadically in a school environment like this have many psychological effects on the children.
Acording to her, “You know they are children with young minds. They can easily imitate what they see. This system can drive them into learning bad habits and attitudes. It can also affect their learning habits. This can also make them to watch war movies at home and in public places. The government should try to relocate the check-point from this area.”
All efforts to reach the leader of the security agency for comments proved abortive as at the time of filing in this report.
