Urhobo Monarchs, Leaders Reject Purported UPU Election, Declare Omene, Others Personal Non-Grata

LAGOS DECEMBER 13TH (URHOBOTODAY)-Urhobo monarchs and leaders of Delta State have rejected the purported election conducted into the national executive committee of Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) by former President General of UPU, Chief Joe Omene and those elected along with him at Mosogar on December 2nd, 2016.
The kings and leaders equally banned Omene and his cohorts from all Urhobo public events and activities on account of their misconduct and multiple violation of Urhobo tradition and values.

The declaration of personal non-grata of Omene and his gang was pronounced in a statement jointly signed by Chairman, Council of Urhobo Traditional Rulers, HRM R.L. Ogbon-Oghoro 1, Chief Peter Obakponovwe on behalf of the President General of the twenty four kingdoms in Urhobo land, Chief Peter Ekeh for Urhobo Historical Society, Chief Palmer Inweh for Urhobo Elders Forum, Chief (Mrs) Elizabeth Odjugo for Ewheta R; Urhobo, Chief Johnson Barovbe for Urhobo Social Club and Chief Jolly Ogbe for Ighele R’ Urhobo.
The statement pointed out that in order to enable a decent assembly of honourable Urhobo kings, chiefs and people to be present at any important forthcoming Urhobo gatherings/ceremonies, Chief Joe Omene and his cohorts must not be invited to the funeral ceremonies of Chief Justice Omo-Agege and to the funeral ceremonies of Olorogun Michael Ibru and/or any other ceremonies in which Urhobo national interest is one main objective henceforth, adding that no other public ceremonies in Urhobo land should accept the presence of Chief Joe Omene as representing Urhobo nation in any capacity whatsoever.
The Urhobo Kings and leaders which called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe without delay the allegations and accusations made by the rest of the UPU Executive, in their letters dated 12/5/2015 and 28/5/2015, against Chief Joe Omene over alleged stollen funds of UPU, served notice on all public officials and entities including the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Government of Delta State of Nigeria to desist from dealing with Chief Joe Omene as President-General of Urhobo Progress Union and as a representative of the Urhobo people.
The statement warned that Urhobo kings and people will sanction any Urhobo person who, in defiance of this notice to ostracizes, flagrantly aids and abets Chief Joe Omene and his cohorts in their attempt to dishonour Urhobo kings and Urhobo traditions, institutions and values.
According to the statement, “ Chief Joe Omene came into office of the President-General of UPU by the sheer accident of the untimely death of General Patrick Aziza on August 16th 2014. It is noteworthy that the Urhobo people did not select or elect Chief Joe Omene as their leader.
“Chief Joe Omene has turned out to be the worst President-General in the 85 years history of the UPU.
“?Before he completed his first year in office, Omene plunged the UPU into its worst crisis when the rest of the UPU Executive in May 2015 accused Omene of extraordinary acts of financial malfeasance impropriety and embezzlement.
“This scandal involved sums of monies over N1.2 billion which his accusers believed he received in the name of UPU from the Presidency in Abuja and other undisclosed sources and were deposited into his personal bank account.
”Omene thus turned the UPU, this 85 years old Urhobo National Organization into his personal property from which to acquire personal wealth.
”?In an attempt to quell the crisis, Urhobo Traditional Rulers, Leaders and Elders invited Omene on several occasions to meetings intended to make peace between him and Urhobo Nation, Leaders and Stakeholders. Omene snubbed the Urhobo Traditional Rulers by refusing to honour their invitation and often resorting to stigmatizing and insulting Urhobo Rulers and tradition in News and electronic media.
”?In addition to such utter disregard and insult to Urhobo traditional institutions, Omene took to court the venerable Chairman of the Council of Urhobo Kings. HRM R.L. Ogbon-Oghoro 1, the Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom, a grand 99 year old sage, because under his leadership the Urhobo people dared to react to Omene’s misconduct.
”?Chief Joe Omene has arrogated to himself the status of Monarch of Urhobo land. This he has demonstrated by parading himself in a car bearing a monarchical plate number: URHOBO 1. Omene also installed an Urhobo Monarch, the Osu Ru Urhobo of Lagos, to whom he issued a certificate of recognition (see URHOBOTODAY.COM November 13th, 2016). This is contrary to Urhobo national values and is a violation of Urhobo Traditions; it is a disgraceful effrontery to Urhobo kings. Omene carried out this act on his own presumed authority. This action was taken by Omene in violation of Urhobo traditions and laws and without the approval of the Council of Urhobo Kings or any Government in Nigeria.
”Overall, Omene’s conduct as President-General of UPU was bizarre and erratic. He once boasted on Television that he was “jaguda”. Urhobo people expect responsible men and women to run the affairs of the UPU, not those who have no qualms about misusing its financial and moral resources. Chief Joe Omene has inflicted a great deal of dishonor and disgrace on Urhobo land and the Urhobo people
.”In all these brazen rape on the Urhobo tradition and culture, he was aided and abetted by the following persons:- (1) JUSTICE JONATHAN SHAKARO (2) CHIEF FRED SOWHO (3) CHIEF (MRS) GRACE USIRARE (4) BARR. MARTINS MUKORO (5) CHIEF PAUL MILTON OHWOVORIOLE (6) BARR. MOSES SEGBA (7) CHIEF RAPHAEL EMECHO (8) CHIEF DUNCAN EWHERE (9) MR. JUSTICE IYASERE (10) CHIEF NAKPODIA (11) ENGR. A.E. BOBOR.”
