LAGOS MAY 20TH (URHOBOTODAY)-A former United States Air Force and Secret Service veteran, Mrs Tanwa Ashiru on Friday delivered lecture on crime reporting to members of Crime Reporters Association (CRAN) on the technique of crime investigation and reporting.
Ashiru who delivered a lecture titled, “How to Become a Better Investigative and Security Reporter” during the first Crime Reporter Association of Nigeria (CRAN)’s meeting organised by the newly elected executive at the Mike Okiro Press Centre, Oduduwa, Ikeja area of Lagos said the first thing for an investigative journalist is to narrow down the subject for investigation, adding that the next thing to do is to analyze trends and patterns of crime and the area it is concentrated in.
She noted that the importance of investigation cannot be overemphasized, adding that it’s not done to smear people’s image but to find facts and reveal truth.
She said investigative journalism is not limited to smearing the identity of another person but to find our facts and reveal truths.
Stating that ‘All hard work brings the profit’, Ashiru said an investigative journalist should be patient, be up to take initiative, be consistent and identify lapses.
On the insecurity at the North-east and the clamour for civilian taskforce to be embed into the military, she said it was imperative that is done.
According to her, it’s a no brainier to include the civilian task force because nothing beats local knowledge especially in gathering information.
Speaking on possible ways to counter insurgency she said there is a need for a Counter Violence Extremism Programme and creating more employment opportunities for Nigeria.
She said, “Patriotism is why the top hierarchy will not take money meant did weapons to buy houses. Unto we as a nation understand that Nigeria cannot break apart, and think as a Nigerian.”
