LAGOS OCTOBER 20TH (URHOBOTODAY)-The Ondo State Police Command has foiled a robbery attempt on United Bank Africa (UBA) located in Akure, capital of Ondo State.
Urhobotoday an online medium reliably gathered that group of armed robbers has hatched plan to rob the bank by digging an underground tunnel from outside the bank premises in a vegetable farm in attempt to gain entrance into the banking hall and rob the bank of cash and other valuables.
The gang, it was gathered, had dug over 15 meters into the bank premises from the vegetable outside the bank at Alagbaka where it is located in Akure metropolice.

Urhobotoday learned that the inderground tunnel was able to contain three persons at a time, while the place from where the hoodlums operated, is isolated from other buildings. It was gathered that the tunnel would have been dug into the banking hall if it had not been discovered by the police.

Police source said the gang that planned the robbery would have operated at the weekend when the bank staff would not be at work, adding that the bankers would have resumed discovering that the banks vault had been blown off and all the money carted away.
The robbers attempt to execute their evil act was however aborted by Akure Police Area Commander, Mr. Dan Okoro, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) who got hint of the robbers plan and immediately swung into action.
According to our source, Okoro and his team storm the vegetable farm where they discovered the already dug underground tunnel linking to the banking hall. They also discovered shovels, diggers and other dangerous weapons.
According to Dan Okoro after holding meetings with all the Banks Chief Security Officers (CSOs) in Akure in line with Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mike Ogbodo’s directives, “The robbers dug a big underground tunnel in a vegetable farm across the fence of the bank in attempt to link it to the bank hall of Akure branch of UBA. Their plan was that after successfully digging the under tunnel into the bank hall, they would have enter the bank on a weekend and empty the bank.

“They were already planning their next stage when we got hint of the operation and storm the place. On sighting the police, the hoodlums took to their heels abandoning their working tools which include shovels, diggers, cutlass and other dangerous weapons. ”
Police source who did not want his name on print corroborated the discovery of the underground tunnel and attempt to rob the bank. He said although no arrest has been made, the police is hunting for the owner of the vegetable farm where the tunnel was dug.
Dan Okoro was the Area ‘E’ Police Area Commander in Lagos until he was transferred to Ondo State. As Area Commander of Area ‘E’ made up of FESTAC, Amuwo-Odofin and Satelite town, he kept criminal activities in the area under control. During his tenure, residents in the area slept with both eyes close.
