30 Urhobo Groups Endorse Jonathan, Okowa, Other PDP Candidates

LAGOS JANUARY 29TH (URHOBOTODAY)-As the general election come closer, no fewer than thirty Urhobo pressure groups have endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for second term, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa as Delta State Governor and other candidates going for House of Senate, Representative and Delta State House of Assembly.
The Urhobo political pressure groups and Non-Governmentsl Organisation who declared their support for Jonathan, Okowa and othe PDP candidates are Delta Youth for Goodluck Jonathan, Network of Professionals for Good Governance, Congress of Urhobo Academics in Politics, G.G. Darah Vanguard, Ughelli South, Catholic Youth Organisation, Delta State, Ex-Urhobo Militants Association, Ughievwen Youth Congress (UYC), Oghior Development Union (ODM), Urhobo Graduate Association (UGA), National Union of Urhobo Students (NUUS), De Focus Alliance for Jonathan/Okowa, Delta Turn by Turn Agenda (DTBTA), Action Group for Jonathan (AGJ) and Ughelli South Riverine Areas Youth Security Forum.
Others are Delta United Youths for Democracy, Owahwa Youth Development Council, PDP Action Group/Bell Ringers, Ughelli South Assembly, Esaba Youths In Politics, Urhobo Youth Network, PDP Youth Transformation Forum, Industrial Parts Dealers Association, Urhobo Unit, Agbarha Kingdom, Warri, Otutuama Youth Council, Delta Women Business Association and Jigbale Market Women?s Network.
A communiqué jointly signed Comrade Francis Arhiyor, President General of Urhobo Youths Association (UYLA), Comrade Vincent Oyibode Secretary-General (UYLA), Comrade Ogheneovo Atiti , Chair, Organising Committee and Moses E. Darah Communiqué Committee issued after the meeting of the groups held at Petroleum training Institute conference hall, Warri, Delta State recently, the National President, Urhobo Youth Leaders Association, Comr. Francis Arhiyor, affirmed that the purpose of organising the rally was to assure that the entire Urhobo Youth have unanimously adopted President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa as the sole candidates for the positions of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Governor of Delta State respectively.
Arhiyor therefore promised Urhobo youths that he would, on their behalf, draw the attention of President Goodluck Jonathan and Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa to the neglected areas of the Niger Delta, particularly in the Urhobo nation, just as he pledged that their Association would engage in grassroots mobilisation for the PDP in all the elections.
The essence of the event was outlined by the Chairman of the Occasion, Dr. Steve Oru, the Honourable Minister of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs. It is a formal declaration of support for President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State governorship candidate and other candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
While expressing his satisfaction over Urhobo Youths’ turn-out at the event, he affirmed that Urhobo is the fifth largest ethnic nationality in Nigeria and was therefore not surprised by the large attendance at the ceremony, stressing that owing to their population and ideological vision, any candidate supported by the Urhobo youth will definitely win the election.
In his eulogy, he recalled that the Urhobo youth have always proven to be intelligent and bold in their quest for democratic dividends, assurring the gathering that the President Jonathan’s administration has contributed much to the development of the youth through various programmes and schemes in the Ministries of Niger Delta Affairs, Youth Development/Sports,Women Affairs among others.
He further recounted various developmental strides/initiatives of the President Goodluck Jonathan-led Government which have positively affected the Nigerian youth, including the award of scholarship to First Class Degree holders. The chairman’s speech generated robust applause from the youth and the large audience.
In his address, representative of Goodluck Jonathan, Nimi Barigha Amange affirmed that all Nigerians are equal, stressing that the Niger Delta citizens cannot be subordinated to play a second fiddle in Nigeria. He fired the patriotism of the audience that “without the Niger Delta, there will be no Nigeria”. He enumerated the achievements of President Jonathan’s administration and described him as a great nationalist and democrat. He urged the Urhobo voters to give PDP 100% at the elections of February 14 and 28, 2015, respectively.
The atmosphere of the event was stirred by the surprise appearance of the Delta State PDP governorship candidate, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. In his speech, he saluted the Urhobo Youth for their support and assured them that everybody will be carried along in his administration. He paid homage to Urhobo politicians and pledged to give the Urhobo their due as the most populous nation in Delta State.
In his explosive lecture, the Lead Speaker, Professor Godini G. Darah, inspired the youth by his revelation of the recurrent injustices perpetrated against the Niger Delta by what he regarded as the parasitic elements of the Northern Oligarchy. Darah stressed that President Goodluck Jonathan is the ‘saviour’ of the Niger Delta and Nigeria. He assured the youths and all present that in his capacity as Delta State representative at the 2014 National Conference in Abuja, he was privileged to know the atrocities being committed against the Niger Delta people.
He disclosed that the Federal Government revenue every year was contributed by the nine oil-producing states and Lagos, adding that the 19 states in the North contribute nothing to the Federation Account. Darah assured all that the National Confab favoured the Urhobo and other minorities by recommending the creation of New Delta State, Anioma State and 17 others across the country. He said that the Confab recommendations that will benefit the minority ethnic groups in Nigeria can only be implemented by President Jonathan if re-elected. Darah?s address listed 10 strategic Urhobo demands for President Jonathan, including revival of DSC, Ovwian-Aladja, siting of Gas Complex in Utorogu area, building of Osubi International Air Port, recovery of Sapele Port from the Navy and construction of Okwagbe River Port.
The event which was sponsored by Professor Godini G. Darah who was the Lead Speaker and Chief Tom Amioku attracted high profile dignitaries from across the country. Among them were Senator Nimi Barigha Amange, Special Guest of Honour, Senator Emmanuel Edesiri Aguariavwodo, and Steve Oru, Hon. Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and Chairman of the occasion. Other high profile other profile dignitaries were Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State PDP Governorship candidate and his running mate, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro, Chief Judith Enamuotor, Member, PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Mike Adiotomre (Father of the Day) and Chairman, Governing Board of Nigerian Maritime Academy, Oron, Chief Tom Amioku, Chairman, PDP, Delta Central and Delta State Commissioner in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). There were Chief Ighoyota Amori, Delta Central PDP Senatorial Candidate, Chief Evelyn Oboro, Member House of Representatives, Comrade Reuben Izeze, PDP Candidate, Ughelli South Constituency, Hon. Solomon Ighrakpata, Delta State Commissioner for Housing among others.
